Vienna is oozing with history: not only was it the de facto centre of European politics for the better part of 600 years (in some ways, it still holds some of that ssway) but during the Cold War, it was one of the relatively few spots where East and West could meet on quasi-equal terms. There's traces of that all over the city, not least in the hotel lobbies in the city's centre. As for the empresses, two always stand out: Maria Theresia, who some argue, with some merit, to be one of the founding figures of a unified Europe - a mother of sixteen who was the first ruling Empress of the Habsburgs as well as the codifier of Austrian law, wager of some very successful wars of establishment, and a very important patron of the arts (see Mozart, Haydn and various painters, sculptors and poets et al.(; and Elisabeth, the OG emo lady as well as (more dubiously) the OG influencer, flirting with death and revolution all her life, being accidentally murdered in 1898, leaving a cult following that has scarcely diminished today.
