Initial list of Metaverse-related standards

Hi all,

Thank you for your feedback and the discussion over the past couple of weeks. This is an exciting area of work for us, and we have a lot of relevant documents. I have now submitted our initial list of Metaverse-related documents. Here is the list I submitted, with the justifications we worked on...

XR Accessibility User Requirements
https://www.w3.org/TR/xaur/

Contains a broad range of technical use cases around making XR environments accessible.

Synchronization Accessibility User Requirements
https://www.w3.org/TR/saur/

Guidance, based on relevant research, on how tolerances in media synchronization can affect perception, and accessibility (covering captions, sign language, XR environment synchronization, and other use cases).

Natural Language Interface Accessibility User Requirements
https://www.w3.org/TR/naur/

Outlines accessibility-related user needs, requirements and scenarios for natural language interfaces. Such interfaces may be used to communicate with agents/services in the meta verse.

RTC Accessibility User Requirements
https://www.w3.org/TR/raur/

Outlines various accessibility related user needs, requirements and scenarios for real-time communication (RTC). These requirements are applicable to any platform being used for RTC. A technical counterpart to the non-technical guidance on inclusive meetings in the Accessibility of Remote Meetings document.

Accessibility of Remote Meetings
https://www.w3.org/TR/remote-meetings/

Guidance for how to overcome accessibility barriers that can occur in remote and hybrid meetings. Relevant for when users are sharing content with each other, as well as for choosing an appropriate meeting platform, and conducting the meeting. This is a non-technical counterpart to the RTC Accessibility User Requirements.

Collaboration Tools Accessibility User Requirements
https://www.w3.org/TR/ctaur/

Describes user needs for accessible, real-time, co-authoring/editing of documents. Relevant for any situation in which users are producing content within the metaverse.

Making Content Usable for People with Cognitive and Learning Disabilities
https://www.w3.org/TR/coga-usable/

Important and fundamental advice on how to help overcome cognitive accessibility barriers when attempting to navigate and interact with a system. Relevant for navigating the metaverse itself, and content, and interactive agents/services within.

Media Accessibility User Requirements
https://www.w3.org/TR/media-accessibility-reqs/

Presents user needs in relation to ensuring that audio and video are presented in an accessible way.

WAI-Adapt: Symbols Module
https://www.w3.org/TR/adapt-symbols/

Provides the means for content authors to annotate content, to indicate the concepts involved. This information can then be used by the user agent to display symbols to help the user understand the content. The users would be presented with symbols (out of many different sets available) that they specifically know and understand. Relevant for any content the user may encounter within the metaverse.

We'll keep you updated as we hear more. You can also follow the work of the MSF at https://metaverse-standards.org/

Best regards,

Matthew
