According to Ethnologue there are 7,159 languages spoken on the planet, many of which face an uncertain future as AI is basically destroying the foundations for their continued use. The article in Technology Review is an eye opener. And it highlights the need to reconsider knowledge representation for language and thus knowledge representation itself, the current state of which is wholly inadequate. https://www.technologyreview.com/2025/09/25/1124005/ai-wikipedia-vulnerable-languages-doom-spiral/ In essence it boils down to ontologies and sound computational linguistics, not tokens as a base for machine learning.
