As to whether KR is a subset of AI or vice versa. it is largely a matter of point of view (what one considers the top level category) In an ontology where THING=mind, intelligence, KR, KR consists of methods used to make K explicit so that it can be embedded consistently in declarations and procedures etc AI is the result of the systematic automation and implementation of KR not viceversa!! The fact that CS has traditionally placed KR as a side thing to AI (without better definition) IS a problem, resulting in unreliability and risk factors (this much I have already written and talked about) leading to the unqualified use of very smart and powerful systems (ML) I do not have a problem with other people have a different view To make statements contrary to fact is the heart of Deepfake and other distortions Regarding HOW to use KR to curb deepfakes (answer to a question in an earlier Dave R post) is actually quite simple. 1. KR is necessary for fact checking. without fact checking,. there can be no reasoning 2. is necessary for evaluation of statements and processes, without which there is no reliability Of course, K can always be faked especially if directly, intentionally so Deepfakes are the result of direct intentional misrepresentation KR is necessary to evaluate if something is true or false Simply put, given a video clip where Obama makes a statement, we need KR to be able to ask ourselves is the statement true or has it been faked? I am not aware of any other method to identify deliberate misrepresentation than checking the facts Sure enough, truth, context and facts are not black and white what is fake? in the age of technological reproducibility, mass delusion and political manipulation of information what is being passed for true is ongoing discussion in the politics and economy department Fact checking is very specialised and has also limitations (how much can one dig) SIDE NOTE Governments say there is an energy crisis but that there is enough suppressed viable and economical technology to produce enough renewable to satisfy the majority of the demand in most countries, Depriving people of heath is going to make angry and motivated to act. Disinformation is the token of politics dominated by the interest of a few. Science and technology are part of that scenario. The ability to discern truth based on some fact is reasoning If any of you great people on this list know of another way to find out whether a piece of information is real or fake other than using knowledge, and its explicit representation please share it here
