Thanks to the recent cross list posts from the W3C AIKR CG on AI and KR a lot of interesting conversations are taking place. But I feel most of these are preaching to the choir. AI and KR are not all about machine learning, deep learning, NLP and NN. As several people have indicated there is a need for a wider understanding of what underlies formal logic, abstract structures for acquiring, recognizing, processing data and information. Are there any papers out there that have tried to present AI and KR inventorizing all related issues in mathematics, physics, computer science, cognitive and neuroscience, biology, philosophy and linguistics fields? If we cannot reach a consensus on what constitutes knowledge and which parts of knowledge can be formalized using logic and mathematical structures which in turn allow us to derive algorithms, we will never get beyond the current confusion. Logic, mathematics, semiotics and language are useful for humans in dealing with knowledge, and biologically inspired cognitive architectures look mainly at the human and other mammalian brains. I personally find invertebrates very inspiring with the octopus, cnidarians (jellyfish) and Ctenophores (comb jellies) standing out. The use of natural language and deep learning are much overrated as these creatures clearly show. KR is well served by a closer inspection of how sentient beings process visual information and information processed through chemo receptors to see how we can capture these processes using mathematics without the use of natural language. And in the case of small jellyfish which have at most a few thousand neural cells or the equivalent thereof, deep learning is not even applicable in how they go about they dairy lives, surviving and thriving and finding the most suitable environments to live in.
