Re: Access Learn Update, August 2017

Thanks for an excellent question, and one on which we hope to get guidance from EOWG when we meet with them next week.

My view is that the role we have taken on as a W3C Community Group is to provide feedback on how W3C accessibility web resources can better support people working in or with online learning, and our primary focus will be on advising on how W3C informative content can be improved.

Clearly, there are some important standards that are part of the online learning accessibility ecosystem but are not published by W3C. The unknown at the moment, for me at least, is how and if we can refer to these in a W3C informative resource on online accessibility. It may be that one of our recommendations is a W3C note on online learning accessibility to indicate where W3C accessibility standards apply, and where other non-W3C standards provide complementary (or possibly overlapping) coverage.

So for now, if there is a recommended action to provide references to non-W3C standards that are important for online learning, we should note them, and hopefully we’ll have some more clarity in a week or so.

In the meantime, further contributions to this discussion would be very welcome!
