May I as a practitioner provide some input on this topic from a "Web Services" perspective? As you probably have noted operating systems are updated at ever increasing speed. The same goes for applications. This (IMO) calls for a more dynamic (adaptable) versioning concept where the requester interrogates (through a discovery service) the target service to figure out if they actually are compatible. If this is the case the requester creates a request adapted for the service. This arrangement makes it possible to selectively add (or even revise) elements to an already defined object without necessarily creating a new version. My conclusion (FWIW): there will likely be multiple solutions to versioning. Anders
