basic authentication is very useful. AS long as the client prints
the realm info it can easily be used to provide strong auth as
provided by Securid, S/Key, Digital Pathways SNK etc.

The 'server' end has to keep state etc but is useful where http/html
is being used to talk to management interfaces. So although its
original intention maybe obsolete its behaviour isn't
