A slight modification of my "selecting opaque validators" proposal: Since a validator that is neither attached to a variant-ID nor unique across all variants cannot be used in a conditional request, it's pointless to send such a validator. Therefore, it is not necessary to use a special syntax (i.e., /S) to tag such validators. Rather, it is sufficient to insist that the origin server not send an opaque validator if it cannot either provide a variant-ID or guarantee uniqueness. This is *almost* what Koen has been asking me for, except that I think it's safe to remove the uniqueness rule if a variant-ID is provided. -Jeff
