I am talking about caches assigning variant-ids because Jeff and Roy seem to want a requirement that there is a variant-id in every preemptively negotiated response. I think such a requirement will just lead to unnecessary complexity. I have no idea _why_ they want to require this, and I won't even rule out that I misunderstood their messages, and that they do not want a variant-id in every negotiated response at all, but will settle for a Content-Location header if there is no variant-id.
