Regarding #1, in the post-process options, check the fix-nbsp-to-br option, by default it is on. If set to yes (the default), this option replaces <TD> </TD> with <TD><BR></TD>. It also works on <P> </P> now. Also, the quote-nbsp option: If set to yes, this causes non-breaking space characters to be written out as entities, rather than as the Unicode character value 160 (decimal). The default is yes.
