XML output without pretty-printing

Is it possible to specify that the output of Tidy should be XML but
without any pretty printing?

Simply setting xml-output: yes and markup: no results in no output being
written at all. (Is this a known "feature"?)

But allowing the pretty-printing (setting markup: yes) is introducing
unwanted spaces in the output. I am after something like the default html
output (ie with output-xml: no output-xhtml: no and markup: no) but can't
find any way to achieve this?

Anybody else come across this problem?

regards,

Bruce Hunter
