P.S. The experience has made me wonder if I should be avoiding schemas if they're not as widely acknowledged as a dtd. To be honest, I never fully understood the concept of validity, since no doubt the use of the xml will require using xslt to transform it first, by which time the undefined elements will have vanished anyhow.
