Are you in a position to indicate the current state of the Java
implementation in
terms of support for the XML Schema recommendation? What is currently
and what's coming?

Work is in progress to add schema support to Xerces-C. And subset
support will be available in the upcoming Xerces C 1.5 release (should
be ready in
next couple of weeks). See http://xml.apache.org/xerces-c/schema.html
for further detail.

In the meantime, you can try out the latest nightly build
http://xml.apache.org/dist/xerces-c/nightly/ .
