A few more facets which may be of interest:

Object Oriented framework:
  If the protocol supports "traditional" object oriented features.

Instances:
  If the protocol support the notion of "instances".

Instance discovery:
  If the protocol support mechanisms of how to find instances.

Language bindings
  If the protocol includes standardized programming languages bindings on
the client and the server side.
  (in addition to SAX and DOM)

Realtime support:
  If the protocol supports hard realtime, through async messaging, timing,
quality of services etc.
