Which formatter are yopu talking about?
Just in case it's about FOP - having set up fontBaseDir property 
pointing to an appropriate directory on the server you can use relative 
pathes in userconfig.xml:
<font metrics-file="xml/arial.xml" kerning="yes" embed-file="ttf/arial.ttf">
