The sentence "The purpose of a simple link is to be a convenient shorthand for the equivalent extended link" in the XLink spec § 5.2 needs some clarification, because a simple-Type element with no href attribute but with a role and title attribute, which is valid, can only be transformed into a corresponding extended link by discarding the role and title attribute too, because no valid locator-Type element can be formed.
