A couple of notes on the EBNF syntax I have chosen, and converted the
abstract syntax productions from:

1) this closely resembles the ENBF in XML 1.0 (http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml)
2) in most cases parens still need to be converted to '(' and ')' terminals
