Validator fails if file ends in .xhtml instead of .html

Using http://validator.w3.org/ to a file that ends in .xhmtl, I get the
following error:

Uh oh! I got the following unknown error:
/usr/local/bin/nsgmls:http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dt
d:262:27:E: omitted tag minimization parameter can be omitted only if
"OMITTAG NO" is specified on the SGML declaration Please make sure you
specified the DOCTYPE properly!

If I rename the file to end in .html, all is well.

Why would the validator even care what extension the file has?

Thanks,

Ross
