Font Asent of Text

Hi,
I want to get the font ascent of a "text" element data similar to 
what is returned by Java's "java.awt.FontMetrics.getAscent()" method.

Can someone point me SVG DOM API which can do the same/similar job 
as "java.awt.FontMetrics.getAscent()"?
