Gradients are still not in any official spec as of yet, but from the
murmurings (and experimental implementations in Webkit), when they do
make it into CSS they wont' have anything directly to do with
background-style, but will rather be more of a browser-generated image
that can be used wherever images can currently be specified
(background-image among them).
