SUMMARY update: MMS Simulators ?

A couple of weeks ago, I sent the following message to www-smil and
www-mobile

> For WAP, there have been many free simulators that allowed developers
> to develop content, and checked what it looked like on a "pseudo
> WAP phone" run on a PC.
>
> Is there similar free software available for MMS ?
>
> Or any other free software that would allow one to play around with MMS
> and see how it works ?

Looks like I forgot to mention the Sony Ericsson simulator in my
previous summary (in my defense: the message I missed was only
sent to www-mobile, not to me personnally or www-smil)

Please find an updated digest of the responses I received below. I
anonymized messages that were sent to me privately.

Thanks to everyone who responded !

Philipp,

For MMS content simulation you may use SMIL Player from InterObject
available at http://www.inobject.com/mmplay.htm The player conforms to
"MMS
Conformance Document" and 3GPP R4 SMIL profile.

Hi Philipp,

Have you checked Forum Nokia:

 http://www.forum.nokia.com/main.html

I just logged in there (you may need to create an account there
to search the site) searched for MMS and found:

 Nokia Developer's Suite for MMS
 http://forum.nokia.com/smsforum/main/1,,1_2_7_2_1,00.html

It says:

[[
Nokia Developer Suite for MMS offers full fledged authoring
environment for Content Creation professionals. It is a
downloadable extension set that is plugged into the leading
edge Content Authoring Tool, Adobe Golive 6. The end-to-end
solution provides means to create a SMIL presentation,
encapsulate it to the correct MMS format and finally
deployment to the terminal emulator that is included in the
downloadable package. (Additionally, this tool combination
can also be seamlessly integrated with Nokia MMSC EAIF
Emulator, also downloadable from this site.) NOTE: Before
installing and using Nokia Developer's Suite for MMS you need
to have following installed: - Adobe GoLive 6 (Adobe GoLive 6 (
http://www.adobe.com/products/golive/)
]]

GoLive apparently has a trial version

I haven't tried Nokia's MMS stuff or Adobe's GoLive. If
you decide to try it, please let me know how it goes.

Go to sms.lycos.co.uk to see a MMS simulator in action.

You need a UK mobile phone sim card to access the site. If interested I
could mail you a password.

Philipp,

Oratrix has a version of GRiNS for the PocketPC (iPaq) that can be
configured to support multiple mobile profiles. At present, you can
select:
 - SMIL Basic
 - MMS
 - 3GPP (PSS4 or PSS5)
 - Full SMIL 2.0 Language

(The profile can be selected on a per-document basis, so you can take a
Basic/MMS/3GPP/SMIL-2 document and see how it will play on various
devices.)

We also have a device configuration profiler that lets you define the
runtime characteristics of various device types. (That is, a fancy,
high-bitrate, color phone w/video or a simple B&W phone with a
micro-screen.)

We also offer an authoring front-end (PC based) that allows you to
create and simulate documents on the PC before sending them to the iPaq.

The package is NOT free (neither the player or the editor). We usually
sell them as 'evaluation kits' to TelCos and equipment manufacturers so
that THEY can understand the differences between MMS/3GPP/SMIL-2.

Interested parties can contact me at:

Dick.Bulterman@oratrix.com

Cheers,
-d.
