I've always viewed triples as being analogous to the following:

<rdf:Description rdf:about="&rdfx;Assertion">
   <rdfs:subClassOf rdf:resource="&rdf;Statement"/>
</rdf:Description>

<rdfx:Assertion>
   <rdf:subject   rdf:resource="..."/>
   <rdf:predicate rdf:resource="..."/>
   <rdf:object    rdf:resource="..."/>
</rdfx:Assertion>
