An ontology is a system to organise things. Like "Trees are plants" "Frogs are animals" "Dogs are mammals" "Mammals are animals" -> "Dog is an animal" etc. You use ontologies to describe what resources you have in a system and how they might relate. Then the individual resources are connected to the ontology, like "Benno is a dog".
