Patents and standards are a bad mix. Take a look at what happened with
the GIF image format, the MP3 audio format and the PDF document format.
At some point patents will always bite either the end-users or people
trying to implement the standards.

The reason why W3C standards have been so successful so far is in my
opinion becourse they are patent free. The whole idea of software
patents is an extremely bad idea, please don't encourage it but instead
work against it!
