NO NO NO

Patents on standards.  I hope this is a joke; I fear that it isn't.  If
someone want to do something proprietary on the web and it causes no
conflict with standards, by all means they can do it (perhaps at the
risk of what they are doing conflicting with later standards).  This
would set a terrible precedent, and retard future progress.

Please say it is a joke.
