The Patented Internet

Ever since it's founding in 1994, the W3C has provided the Internet
Community a solid base of vendor neutral standards.  This new proposal
is threatening this trust in the W3C.  This new proposal would allow
corporations with nothing but self-interest to have a piece of the
Internet, a Standard.  The Internet is the work of many people over many
years and the Standards that make the Internet run should represent
that.  Although corporations have made significant contributions to the
Internet, individuals have been the driving force.  Patented standards
will, in the end, hamper the growth of the Internet with law suits and
numerous standards.
