patents on the web

I have been reading a bit about the whole patent issue, and my concern is
the fragmentation of the web.  Patents are not inherently a bad idea, but if
single organizations can patent a previously open technology, then it will
become increasingly difficult for those of us trying to create simple, open
solutions for the web.
