With this patent policy, the W3C voluntarily removes one of the biggest shields which allows the W3C to play with the Big Boys and work its wondrous diplomacy in the fight for standards. Huge companies with colossal financial interests know how to play this game better than you. Whatever advantage you see in this change of policy is not worth the evident risk.
