This is very sad, I believe a big mistake was made by w3c years ago for not licensing the open standards with an open public license like GPL. The only reason I can see for this new patenting strategy at w3c is to secure more market space for the large companies that started working with w3c lately. I mean, Microsoft did not even care about the Internet until mid ninetieth, and now they will force fees onto open data communications standards in order to create bigget barriers of entry for small companies.
