RAND equals No Standard

To whom it may concern,

I think that no patented technology will ever become a real *standard*. Everytime 
that a patented technology becomes wide used someone finishes by developing a RF 
alternative. So we finish by having two or three concurrent "standards", what 
causes a great number of troubles.

The most known example of that kind of event is the duality between the GIF 
(patented) and PNG (RF) file formats (several other examples could be listed). 
Question: wich of them is *the* standard? Answer: none, both must be implemented 
in a web browser.

RAND will cause a multiplication of concurrent "standards" what, for me, 
corresponds to having *NO* standard at all.
