OK Janet Daly - Let us SPELL IT OUT for you

From The Register:

The omens aren't good: in a response to LinuxToday at the
   weekend, W3C's Janet Daly wrote:-

"As of now, many comments sent to W3C's Patent Policy
Comment list simply say, "Don't!" By responding in this
manner, writers give the Working Group nothing on which to
build a constructive response or to consider."

OK, let's spell it out for Janet:

The purpose of standards is to provide interoperability for everyone,
they are developed for the common good, with common benefits to all
participants and computer users worldwide.

They should be FREE: ie, NO ROYALTIES

They should be OPEN: ie, ANYONE CAN IMPLEMENT THE STANDARD

They should be PROTECTED: all W3C participants and their sponsoring
organizations should be required to WAIVE ANY CLAIMS on patents that are
"mistakenly" introduced into the standards process.

For chrissakes, people.
