Yes that is what TeX would do, and also firefox and mathplayer 
(attached) textual elements are aligned on their baselines or 
equivalently if you prefer the axis of alignment of a textual element is 
always the same height above the baseline independent of font.
So the font settings as you go into the mrow affect the axis, but the 
axis is constant for the mrow.
