HTUU_encode.c limitation

Does someone know why does the HTUU_encode have the following limitation?

  *             nbytes   is the number of bytes in that buffer.
  *                      This cannot be more than 48.

What if I have to encode a longer string (more than 48)?
Is there a code working around this?
