dir filtering?

I would like to know the best approach to getting the server not to list
certain files, or files that begin with certain letters, patterns, etc.
 I'm new to Jigsaw and somewhat new to the oo approach to things, which
makes the learning curve horrendous.  Please give suggestions.  Thanx.
