Some list do not even have completely numeric "numbering". German laws, 
for instance, are often numbered like this:
   Article 1
   Article 2
   Article 3
   Article 3a
   Article 4
   ...

Note that article 3a is *not* part of article 3 in this example. Both 
live on the same level. 3a was merely added later.
