RE: Promotion of XHTML

Can you tell me where you found this information?  I have never seen
anything like this stated anywhere within the W3 documents.

<br /> in XML is equivalent to <br></br>

<br /> in HTML is equivalent to <br>&gt;, which is equivalent 
to the XML markup
<br></br>&gt;

I cannot see how those two could be called compatible...
