Except that NS broke it.

Compare NS 2.x, 3.x, and 4.x.  Not the same.

Now, put you images inside a table.  Breaks it in a different way.

In other words, the only way to do cross platform scripting today, without
a bunch of extraneous code to ubbreak the array, is to name the images.

It is also nice because you don't have to worry about someone putting another
image on the page and shifting the arrays on you, etc.  If it is named,
it is a direct reference.
