Netscape's SPACER

Can anyone explain to me what the TYPE and SIZE attributes add to SPACER besides complexity, confusion, and extra characters?

Why not just <SPACER HEIGHT=n WIDTH=n>, with default height and width zero?

As far as I can see, the only lost functionality is the implicit line break with
<SPACER TYPE="vertical" SIZE=n>, but so what? Since ALIGN="bottom" is default, <BR><SPACER HEIGHT=n> would do the same with less typing.
