We need to be careful here with the distinction between mapping from
arbitrary GI's to a standard set of elements (GI -> GI*) and mapping
arbitrary GI's to arbitrary atoms in the/a standard language used to
derive semantics.

I agree that the latter is necessary, I do not think the former is.
