The last paragraph in <http://www.w3.org/TR/1999/REC-html401-19991224/struct/lists.html#h-10.3> doesn't make sense. However, it does describe the way definition lists are used on the web. Not to define an instance, but more to associate two related items. Like a simple table. I think the HTML WG has to do something on this sectoin.
