'media' attribute default value contradiction

The syntactic document type definition in <http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/sgml/dtd.html> gives no default value for the 'media' attribute of the 'link' element type or of the 'style' element type.  The prose, however, says differently: <http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/present/styles.html#adef-media> gives the default value as 'screen'.
