As I understand, you want to separate the language from the country
code. 
In the example:
<BODY LANG=fr>
        ... en français ...
        <SPAN LANG=de>...auf deutsch...</SPAN>
        ... en français ...
    </BODY>
you want to switch from français to german language. The LANG=de stands
for Germany, not for the german language (gr) isn'it?
