I dont think what you are asking about is specifically to do with
xforms, but as you asked the question ...

I have looked into this in the past and have 2 suggestions
1) You could use the "389 Directory Server"
http://directory.fedoraproject.org/ http://port389.org
with the DSML gateway 
http://directory.fedoraproject.org/wiki/DSML_Gateway
although it may be possible to just use the gateway with a regular Ldap
server.

Or 2) Use the castor dsml api and write your own web application
http://castor.codehaus.org/1.3rc1/javadoc/org/exolab/castor/dsml/package-summary.html

Both these solutions use java.

I plan to do exactly what you mention using the DSML gateway and xforms
for the user interface. If you have any more questions you can contact
