Question about xpath

Hi

In the xpath spec its mentioned that the xpathEvaluator has to be
implemented by the document interface.
The evaluator does not have any dependency on document node i.e the
functions that the xpathevaluator provides don't use the document node. Then
why should the dom client need a document instance to call xpath functions?
