spell checker seems ill-focused

I'm puzzled that I cannot get the spell checker to check my rendered text,
only. It insists on checking my source, and then finds all sorts of source
tokens, etc., not to be in its English dictionary. This basically makes
the spell-checker useless.

I looked for the answer in the documentation and didn't see any help there.

Am I missing something here?
