Media Accessibility User Requirements comments

  Hi Editors,

Below are some high priority issues that EOWG participants would like addressed before publication and announcement of the Working Draft http://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/media-a11y-reqs/

EOWG has additional comments that can be considered later (possibly including suggestions for edits to these quick changes). We will submit these through the requested channels before the next deadline.

Location: Abstract
Current: "This document aggregates the requirements of an accessibility user..."
Change to: "This document aggregates the accessibility requirements of users with disabilities..."
or "This document aggregates the requirements of users with disabilities..."
(also acceptable, though not preferred: "This document aggregates the requirements of users with accessibility needs...")

Location: Abstract
Current: "It first introduces a background on the needs of sensory impaired users, which is particularly meant as an introduction for people who never had to consider such needs in relation to audio and video."
Change to: "It first provides an introduction to the needs of users with disabilities in relation to audio and video."
(especially want to delete "for people who never had to consider such needs" because everyone *should* have considered it)

Location: 2. Accessible Media Requirements by Type of Disability
Current: "Editorial note: This section of "Media Accessibility User Requirements" may be edited to further align with the "Accessibility Barriers" section of How People with Disabilities Use the Web once that document is complete. It is provided as-is at this time in order to present general background for sections 2 and 3 of this document."
Change: Please move this paragraph to the top of this section, update the link, and change the text to something more like: "Editorial note: This section is a rough draft. It will be edited to align with <http...WAI/intro/people-use-web/Overview.html>How People with Disabilities Use the Web</a>. This draft is included now to provide general background for sections 2 and 3 of this document."

Location: 2. Accessible Media Requirements by Type of Disability
Current: "e.g., for mobility problems,"
Change: "e.g., for people with physical disabilities,"

Location: 2.2
Current: ", although they will have similar issues as people who are blind."
Change: Delete this phrase.
The accessibility solutions needed by most people with low vision are entirely different from the solutions needed by people who are blind. This is a significant misunderstanding that we need to avoid feeding and help clarify.

Location: 2.7  Dexterity/mobility impairment
Current: "Dexterity/mobility impairment' (the heading itself)
Change to: Physical impairment
or: Physical disability

Location: 2.7  Dexterity/mobility impairment
Current: "People with physical disabilities such as dexterity,..."
Change to: "People with physical disabilities such as poor dexterity,..."

Location: 2.8
Current: Entire section on autism.
Change: Delete it. (possibly add the last two sentences to the main paragraph under 2.8 Cognitive and neurological disabilities)
It goes into more detail and provides a different type of information than all the other sections, and is therefore quite awkward.

Location: 3.3
Current: "; for example, it may be of benefit for Aspergers Syndrome and other autistic-spectrum problems"
Change: "; for example, it might benefit people with Aspergers Syndrome and other Autistic Spectrum Disorders"

The following e-mails list lower-priority issues that can be addressed later:

* http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/w3c-wai-eo/2011OctDec/0024.html (mostly basic editorial & understanding)
* http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/w3c-wai-eo/2011OctDec/0020.html
* http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/w3c-wai-eo/2011OctDec/0021.html (comment on [VP-2])
* http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/w3c-wai-eo/2011OctDec/0019.html (mostly broad editorial comments)

Location: Abstract
Current: "A third section explains how these content technologies fit in the larger picture of an accessibility system..."
Change: "A third section explains how these content technologies fit in the larger picture of accessibility..."
rationale: "an accessibility system" may be negatively misunderstood.

Location: 2. Accessible Media Requirements by Type of Disability
Current: First sentence starts out with two types of disabilities (visual & audio). The next sentence covers cognitive, and the next physical.
Issue: People skimming this section could miss the second sentence, or take the first out of context.
