SV: What exactly will trigger a screen reader buffer update?

Hi Steve

Thanks for your answer.

Sorry if it was not quite clear what I wanted to do.

I want the buffer to update but I do not want the screen reader to start reading.

I understand that:

” a buffer update does not = screen reader starts reading new content”

However, the screen reader will have to encounter the new content, so that it is available when the user wants to read it. Preferably without the user having to perform a manual screen reader buffer update.

I hoped that I by using a live region could make the screen reader encounter the new content and therefore force a buffer update. – And by setting the polideness_setting to “off” tell the screen reader not to actually read the new content.

I understand from your answer that it is not the right way to go about it.

Do you know if there is any way to make sure that the screen reader buffer will update after the new content is added?

Thanks!

Lars

hi Lars,

a buffer update does not = screen reader starts reading new content, it means that when the screen reader encounters the new content it will be available.

aria-live=off is equal to the absence of the attribute.

Hi clever people :)

Can anyone tell me exactly what will trigger an update of the screen reader buffer, when new content is dynamically added to a webpage?

I do not want the screen reader to automatically start reading the new content.

Is aria-live=”off” the right way to go in this case?

Are there other methods that will make the screen reader buffer update?

When searching the internet I only find rather old information on this subject.
