Introduction

As a synthesis of knowledge and web technologies, the semantic web has
been gaining tremendous attention world-widely. One noteworthy
movement is the increasing recognition of this new technology in
typical scientific areas such as life science, earth science, and
social science. In general, the merits of the semantic web with
respect to scientific research are exhibited in different perspectives
encompassing collective knowledge acquisition, semantic data mash-up
and integration, scientific workflow management and composition,
integrative knowledge discovery and data mining, logic-based
hypothesis checking and so forth. However, presently, the Semantic Web
researchers have largely focused on formal aspects of logic languages
or general-purpose semantic application development, with insufficient
consideration of requirements from specific scientific areas. On the
other hand, general science researchers grow ever more dependent on
the web, but they have no coherent agenda for!
exploring the emerging trends on the semantic technology. It urgently
requires the development of a multi-disciplinary field to foster the
growth and development of e-Science applications based on the semantic
technologies and related knowledge-based approaches.

Topics

The intended book aims to bring together the state-of-the-art studies
on applications of the Semantic Web technologies in a variety of
e-Science applications. The topics include but not limited to:

Semantic e-Science Foundations:
Knowledge representation and ontology engineering for e-Science,
 Knowledge aquisition for e-Science,
Semantic data integration and scientific data management,
Semantic web service and scientifc workflow composition,
 Semantic web and data mining,
 Collective intelligence, Web 2.0/Web 3.0 and e-Science.

Semantic e-Science Applications:
 Semantic e-Science for Earth Science,
 Semantic e-Science for Social Science,
 Semantic e-Science for Life Science,
 Semantic e-Science for Material Science,
 Semantic e-Science for Geoscience,
 Semantic e-Science for Physics.

Chapters on featured e-Science applications are particularly welcomed,
but chapters on funndermental aspects and basic methodologies without
a specific application background are also solicited. All chapters
will be peer-reviewed, and we seek high-quality submissions with
original research.

Targeted Audience

The book is primarily intended for scientists, professionals and
consultants in touch with cross-disciplinary research and strategic
management in e-Science and Web technologies. The book can be utilized
in advanced courses as supplements to course materials in knowledge
management, web technology, and e-Science education, and also serve as
an addition to library reference sections.

Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before Sep.
15, 2008, a 1-2 pages chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission
and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted
proposals will be notified by Oct 1, 2008 about the status of their
proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to
be submitted by Dec. 20, 2008. All submitted chapters will be reviewed
on a double-blind review basis.

Book chapters should be prepared according to the standard
Springer-Verlag format. An author kit will be sent to the intended
contributors. All chapters should be submitted electronically as email
attachment in PDF file format to Dr. Huajun Chen (Email:
huajunsir@gmail.com).
