"Do you know of any providers of social networking software that is based on semantic web architectures such as RDF, OWL, or Topic Maps?"

My question is THIS:
Is it essential that the backend be a triple store - or could an rdbms based store simply be tapped for elements of triples from contextually relevant records, to then be fed into an RDF/OWL structure on the fly and handled/interpreted accordingly?

Thanks for your thoughts.
